We are revising our Resident Handbook and need your insight…

Is your community smoke-free? If yes, how does your policy read and how did you transition from a smoking to a non-smoke campus?
Does your community have a pet-policy for residents and how does it read?

Our campus is a smoke-free campus. We include the vocabulary in our residency agreement and in our handbook. We have a designated smoking area on our campus for individuals such as staff. We have been smoke-free for several years, so I cannot relay information on what the transition was like. We require that all residents moving to our campus do not use tobacco products.

We have a pet policy that requires residents to supply liability insurance and a designee who would take care of the pet if something were to happen to them. It also outlines that they are responsible for any issues caused by the pet, such as damage or any injuries to any other individual. They are also required to pay a fee.

Yes – we are Tobacco Free! We rolled this out a couple years ago. I’ve attached our resident policy for your review. Following is the statement in the Associate Handbook:

a. Plantation Village became a tobacco free workplace effective August 1, 2017. This means that tobacco use is not permitted on community premises or when using Plantation Village property, including the following: • company owned, leased areas, including parking lots • resident homes • company offices • company motor vehicles and golf carts. Failure to comply with this policy may lead to disciplinary action up to, and including, termination.

Yes – we have a Resident Pet Policy and a Resident Guest Pet Policy – and… recently rolled out a Pet Policy for associates as well! All 3 are attached.

1. We are not smoke free but have a smoking policy. Since we are a condo association it is very difficult to actually restrict what they do inside the home unless it affects others.
2. We have pet policy but it is very liberal. We do not really restrict any breed or size, only temperament and behaviors.
