We circulate cards and invite employees to help if they wish. Our company has no fund for this I am aware of. I recently gave up some time to deliver a bed that was donated to a hardship employee case with a truck borrowed from a resident. If word were circulated, several employees or residents might have items they would donate, like beds and furniture.

We have an employee fund that we carry on our balance sheet for this purpose. The monies come from different sources such as yard sales that the members have and they contribute the proceeds to the fund. If we offer another community some assistance in some fashion the other community often makes a contribution into the fund as well. But if an employee is in a hardship situation either the employee or their manager will go to HR and request the funds. It is then discussed with the ED and a dollar figure is determined at that point.

We do offer assistance with hardship loans from 401(k)s and PAL buy outs through HR. Employees will often pool funds on their own. I do not believe our resident’s association has ever given funds to an individual.

We have what is called an Employee catastrophic fund. The have a major even like you describe below – they write the scenario on the appropriate form, it gets signed off by the department manager, then on to the ED and then on to the corporate office for approval or denial. They can access it one time up to 2,500.00 for major issues – home burned, utilities turned off, eviction, etc.
There is an account specifically set up for these funds. Our employees can also donate some PTO hours to their coworkers in a time of crisis.
