What is the management structure of your wellness department? Is there a "wellness director" over all dimensions of wellness? Do separate managers (health and fitness, life enrichment, chaplains etc.) report to the executive director or to someone other than an overall wellness director?

The Department of Well-Being (not wellness) consists of primary care, conventional and complementary therapies, social work, pastoral counseling, life enrichment, fitness and the higher levels of support (assisted living and skilled nursing). All of these services are accountable to the Director of Well-Being, who reports to the CEO. These various services are housed in one dpt to facilitate communication and coordination among staff who support the whole resident, no matter where the person lives, which is a practice in line with our philosophy. We use the term “well-being” instead of “wellness” because we see meaning, purpose and life satisfaction at the core and take into account all aspects of the person’s current, past and future lifestyle/preferences as we partner with them to identify and provide support. We have used the term for about 15 years, so wellness has come to mean something similar, but we continue with the term that speaks to the fullness of the person’s life because of our history with and connection to it.

Please let me know of further questions!

We do have Wellness Directors at each community who report directly to the Executive Director. The Wellness Directors are responsible for all dimensions of wellness with our residents and also support our employee wellness strategy. Depending on the size of the community, the Wellness Director may have an assistant who supports wellness programming. We do have Chaplains at each community who generally report to our Resident Services Directors.
Hope this helps.
