All employees should be focused and attentive to our Members at all times while on duty. Therefore, personal telephone calls should be made only in the break room or at the outside break tables during rest breaks or meal breaks.

Cell phones and/or pagers (except for those that are issued/approved by the facility) may not be turned on during work hours. Employees may use a cell phone or pagers for personal business only while on break in a break room or in a smoking area.

Employees may not receive personal telephone calls while they are working, unless there is a genuine emergency. In the case of an emergency, loved ones, schools, day care centers etc can call the Concierge and leave a message for the employee. The employee will be located immediately and arrangements will be made for the employee to return the phone call. If after hours, the caller will hear a voice message and should select the prompt for “Security” and the Security Officer on duty will contact the employee.

If the call is not an emergency, the supervisor may take a message and the employee may return the call from the break room when on break.

Employees are never to use a Member’s phone for personal business unless it is a true emergency.

This issue is the biggest thorn in my side. We have a “no” cell phone policy for line staff (dietary, CNA’s housekeeping) while working, however it seems impossible to police. The management staff which includes nurses seems to utilize them for communication with other staff and doctors. That said, it just makes it so hard to hold everyone accountable for cell phone usage and abuse. So, yes we have a policy that we have trouble enforcing. It just seems the way of the world now. Sorry not much help!

Our policy states ”to ensure residents are provided uninterrupted quality service, staff members are not permitted to use personal wireless communication devices (i.e. cell phone, pager, PDA’s, etc…) during scheduled work hours except in the case of an emergency and only out of ear shot of the residents”. I hope this is helpful.

We do not have a companywide cell phone policy. We have policies addressing the use of cell phones that are given out for work purposes. These vary per department based on the type of work you are doing. Different jobs require different levels of cell phone usage.
