Question from someone seeking advice from the LeadingAge North Carolina membership:

Here at Adams Farm Living & Rehab, we have a 9 year old Golden Retriever that lives in the facility.  She is an older dog that receives glucosamine with her meals and occasionally gets hot spots that we treat.  We have a resident that wants to be very involved with her care.  However, we cannot allow her to keep the medicine in her room.  My questions are as follows:

• Do other facilities allow residents to be involved in the care of the animals such as administering medications?
• How do other facilities manage the animal’s care on a day to day basis, specifically the weekend when there is limited staff?
• Finally, would facilities be willing to share their policies and procedures with us?

We may have been misdirected, but we restricted the care of this cat to our personnel. We absolutely encouraged residents to shower the pets with affection and attention, but our team performed the actual care.

This is as beneficial to him as it is to the dog! We have a care plan for the animal as well! If the resident were to give the medication to the dog, he would have to get it from the med tech.
