Driver Requirements
  1. What credentials does your community require for drivers and is there an age limit?
  2. Are the drivers employed or contracted?
  3. Does your community require all drivers to have CDLs?
  4. If driving for medical appointments are these drivers required to be certified nursing assistants?

We have 2 drivers that have their CDLs. Both are employed by the center and meet the requirements for the state of NC. Medical appointments do not require the driver to be a CNA because we always send a CNA for SNF residents.

Staff who operate TLC vehicles are required to have a valid driver’s license and auto insurance. We also inform our carrier of staff who will drive TLC vehicles frequently. Drivers for our transportation department are required to have a CDL with passenger endorsement.
Are the drivers employed or contracted? TLC employees
Does your community require all drivers on staff to have CDLs? Drivers in our transportation department are required to have a CDL with passenger endorsement.
If driving for medical appointments are these drivers required to be certified nursing assistants? No. If a resident needs someone to accompany them to a medical appointment, a Homecare aide is assigned.

1) Our attorney recommended that all drivers must be 21 years of age, with a valid NC driver’s license, a clear criminal background check and driving record and go through our community's Driver Training prior to operating a vehicle. Driver Training is basically just an overview/orientation of the vehicle, a practice drive around, and shadowing when necessary for the position.
2) All drivers are employees of our community
3) The Director of the Vitality Department has a CDL and we also hire additional PRN CDL drivers for special events, nights and weekends. Many staff members are trained to drive the smaller vehicles and might cover the on campus shuttle, outings, and even medical transportation in a pinch. CDL drivers might also fill in on a smaller vehicle in a pinch.
4) Our medical drivers do not have to be a CNA and never leave the medical van. Residents requiring assistance getting to and from van or with toileting must bring a family member or pay an additional fee for a CNA/Companion.

No age limit, drivers’ license for type of vehicle driving. We check their driving record annually, ask that they self-disclose any infractions between annual checks and have a point system that would disallow them to operate company vehicles if they exceed the number of points allowable to operate community vehicles, including golf carts.
Are the drivers employed or contracted?
employed
Does your community require all drivers on staff to have CDLs?
All staff who work in life enrichment and transportation are required to have a CDL with a P endorsement.
If driving for medical appointments are these drivers required to be certified nursing assistants?
No, however, if a resident is need of support a CNA goes along to the appointment with the driver at the cost of the resident.

What credentials does your community require for drivers on staff and is there an age limit?
Our drivers are a mix of volunteers, but primarily staff. Our insurance carrier puts an age limit of 70 on anyone who drives a company vehicle.
Are the drivers employed or contracted?
Employed and volunteer
Does your community require all drivers on staff to have CDLs?
We do not have vehicles that require CDL’s. Obviously, if we did purchase a vehicle large enough to require a CDL, we would do that. In lieu of vehicles this size, we contract with a third party when we need a larger vehicle.
If driving for medical appointments are these drivers required to be certified nursing assistants?
Not all our drivers are C.N.A.’s, however, we do have one that is in order to handle medical appointments where transfers or assistance with ADL’s is required.

Glad to answer your questions!
All of our drivers are employed by us and must have and maintain a valid NC CDL, along with a clean driving record. All drivers are CPR and First Aid certified but are not certified nursing assistants. We do not use any contracted drivers unless we have chartered a bus for a special occasion. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
