Next Week’s LeadingAge NC COVID-19 Call-in Moved to May 26
In recognition of Memorial Day, next week’s LeadingAge North Carolina “COVID-19 Call-in” will be held on Tuesday, May 26 at 2 pm. Call-in to share what you’re hearing, seeing, and doing and learn from your peers across the state. To access the call, dial (201) 616-0673 and, when prompted, enter the passcode 841692.

“Reopening” Documents for LPC, Affordable Housing Providers
LeadingAge national has posted a series of “reopening”/crisis recovery documents that we hope will help guide CCRCs and affordable housing providers through the next phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. Documents include: a Decision Matrix; Operational Issues and Guidance Charts; Recovery Tools; and Resiliency Roadmaps. You can find the documents online here (for CCRCs) and here (for affordable housing).

Additional Provider Relief Funds Released to Skilled Nursing Facilities
HHS announced officially this morning that $4.9B went out to 15,600 certified SNFs and 333 Medicaid-only nursing homes TODAY. We have received word that members are already seeing this in their bank accounts. Of note, the final formula that HHS used to determine payments is different from the one outlined in the notice sent to providers yesterday. It is more. SNFs will each receive $50,000 base payment plus $2,500 per bed. Click here for an article that provides more detail.

Lifting of Restrictions in Facilities

LeadingAge North Carolina is serving on the state’s task force working on issues surrounding the lifting of restrictions in long term facilities. A part of this work includes testing and PPE considerations. To that end, we would appreciate your comments and observations about testing and PPE based upon your community’s experiences. Please email Tom Akins at tom.akins@leadingagenc.org.

Updated HUD FAQs
HUD has once again updated their MFH coronavirus FAQs with key information for housing providers. The new FAQs address residual receipt remittance, carrying over late fees during the eviction moratorium, messaging to residents about confirmed cases on site, delayed CNAs and audits, and more. You can find a summary online here.

GAO study on nursing home infection control

The Government Accountability Office issued a report today on infection control deficiencies in nursing homes, titled “Infection Control Deficiencies were Widespread and Persistent in Nursing Homes Prior to COVID-19 Pandemic.” The investigators found that nursing homes frequently fell short on preventive measures like hand hygiene or isolating sick residents (this is prior to COVID). Of course, they note that all the deficiencies they found were not severe; residents were not harmed by the oversight. Here’s an article from the Washington Post on the report.

Practical Tools for Staff Conversations
In an effort to help our leaders inspire and motivate their teams, here is today’s short tool:

From The Ersatz Elevator, written by Daniel Handler:

"Are you ready?" Klaus asked finally.

"No," Sunny answered.

"Me neither," Violet said, "but if we wait until we're ready we'll be waiting for the rest of our lives, Let's go."

Today's challenge: You are making a difference in the lives of the frailest of the frail when they are shut away from the very people they hold most dear. You are their caretaker, their confidant, their companion, their strength, their life. You share their joys and feel their pain. You are a hero! Your work is priceless; your story is real. We've waited long enough for somebody to tell your story. Don't wait until you're ready. Start telling your story.

Housing Action Alert. Today’s action alert for the House senior affordable housing relief bill.
