CMS releases final RAI Manual for PDPM kick-off
CMS yesterday released the final version of the MDS 3.0 RAI Manual (version 1.17.1), which becomes effective in less than two weeks, October 1. The final RAI changes are the last big piece of guidance to skilled nursing operators before the onset of the Patient-Driven Payment Model. New changes clarify which assessments swing-bed providers must complete, the definition of “interruption window” for interrupted Part A-covered stays, changes regarding group therapy policies, and more. To see the CMS announcement and access the new document, CLICK HERE.

North Carolina General Assembly Approves New Political Maps
North Carolina’s new political maps gained final approval from the General Assembly earlier this week. The maps can’t be vetoed by Governor Roy Cooper (that is prohibited by the state constitution). Next stop? A panel of judges still gets to weigh in on the maps, which will happen over the coming days, and could potentially order them redrawn yet again. Then new House and Senate maps can be viewed online.

Medicaid Expansion
A bill tied to Medicaid expansion is back on the table in the North Carolina House of Representatives. House bill 655 (“NC Health Care for Working Families”) would expand the provision of Medicaid eligibility inl North Carolina. The two main issues of contention (outside of some who don’t want to see any expansion of eligibility) include a work requirement and premium payments. Even if the bill passes the House, it faces an uncertain future in the Senate.

#DearCandidate Campaign Needs YOU
By 2030, the population of older adults will grow to over 77 million in the U.S., 19% of Americans. 70% of those older adults will need assistance with daily living, and caregivers are in short supply. The current structure of aging services is not prepared to meet this demand, which will impact current and future generations. Despite this huge demographic and need for support, conversations impacting and supporting those who provide care for older adults are often absent from discussions at the local, state, and national levels. More than ever, it is crucial to focus national attention on how to fund and provide the best care and services for the quickly growing population of older adults, an issue that touches millions of us now, and many millions more in the future. #DearCandidate is a campaign to educate and build awareness during the 2020 election cycle around issues impacting those who care for and support older adults. Join us in starting conversations with 2020 election candidates on long-term care, aging services workforce, and quality of care for all older adults. Click here for more information about how you can support this campaign and add your voice to the conversation.
